♥ Maurice Sendak
October 26th, 2009(Interviewer) What do you say to parents who think the “Wild Things” film may be too scary?
Sendak: I would tell them to go to hell. That’s a question I will not tolerate.
(Interviewer) Because kids can handle it?
Sendak: If they can’t handle it, go home. Or wet your pants. Do whatever you like. But it’s not a question that can be answered. [...] This concentration on kids being scared, as though we as adults can’t be scared. Of course we’re scared. I’m scared of watching a TV show about vampires. I can’t fall asleep. It never stops. We’re grown-ups; we know better, but we’re afraid.
(Interviewer) Why is that important in art?
Sendak: Because it’s truth. You don’t want to do something that’s all terrifying. I saw the most horrendous movies that were unfit for child’s eyes. So what? I managed to survive.

Definitely worth the read.
Michael Wm. Kaluta and Madame Xanadu
October 12th, 2009I read a lot of comics, but I’m very picky about what I read. A couple of months ago my pull list got a little bit empty, and I needed something new to read. I went through the shelves in the comic book store, I was going back and forth and didn’t know what to do… then I noticed a woman with black hair, surrounded by mystical *stuff*.

I went back home with my new purchase, and read it. The story was intriguing and most of all, the art was beautiful. The 5-issue storyline “Exodus Noir” was drawn by Michael Wm. Kaluta, who was an unknown name to me, I don’t know how he has managed to stay under my radar. I have to admit that I fell in love with his detailed, but somehow very expressionist line-work. And I fell in love with Madame Xanadu, and I am now hunting down all the past issues.
Here is some more of his work:

Dusty Attic
September 22nd, 2009Monthly for the childrensillustrator club in DevianArt:
It is a tribute to my grandma’s attic and its wonders, which faced an unfortunate destiny when my uncle renovated the house around 10 years ago. All the books, clothes, toys, burned, and gone.
I don’t remember much about the attic, I remember it was warm, the walls made out of wood, the floor covered in old rugs. There were a bunch of dusty old cardboard boxes lying around, books, shoes (you can find my favorite pair of red high heel shoes from the drawing as well), anything that you can image. I used to stumble around in the red high heels when I was a little girl.
I also remember that the daylight colored the attic with a warm yellow tone, that made everything seem as if they were almost the same color, especially the stuff that was covered in dust.
Every night I spent at my grandma’s place, I heard *things* going on in there. I used to wonder what it was. Most of the sounds were too loud to be mice, even though that was my grandma’s explanation when I asked. I always considered the attic to be the “kingdom of spiders”, and that a huge spider woman lived there, and was responsible of the loud bangs and clicks.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
August 28th, 2009Evergreen Cemetery, LA
August 27th, 2009As some of you may know, I’m an eager graveyard tourist.
Last Saturday me and my husband went to visit one of the oldest existing cemeteries in LA, Evergreen cemetery (founded in 1877). I don’t know what to say… the cemetery is so badly kept, especially the oldest parts. While some newer parts have green grass and everything is taken care of, some parts are the exact opposite. The headstones are dirty, broken, and the ones in the ground are covered in dust and the dried, yellowish brown grass covers everything. It looks like no one even tries to take care of the old parts.
Besides the sad general condition of the older areas, there are some really beautiful headstones and statues. If there were a bit more trees, more flowers and a green grass everywhere, I would imagine it being a very beautiful place to walk around.

L’Otage
August 27th, 2009Finished a couple of drawings last night:
This one has been in progress for years, and I was glad to finish it. The background was just so much work, due to the amount of crosshatching, and I had some moments of despair with that. My husband kept on commenting on the piece though, and that made me finally finish it. He really keeps me going, in every way. ♥
This was an experimental piece in many ways, I did it with fountain pen/brush and ink instead of a micron pen (that I have been secretly using for the last 8 months). It was like meeting an old friend, and I think the microns can go hide now.
